Of course there is a vaccine for Always In Debt Syndrome. Well get to that as soon as weve taken you through the process. Early in the New Year is the right time to expose bad debt – the kind that drains you of money, robs your nights of sleep, and leads directly to AIDS.



Debt has no silent letter. The B is a loud cry – beware! Theres only one cause of debt: spending is greater than income. Borrowing is like knocking your head against a wall to cure a headache.



Borrowing money costs...more money. For more money, read interest. If you can afford more money, then borrow. But if you can afford more money, delay your purchase, pay yourself the interest, and buy when you have cash. This is so logical that it makes many salary managers suspicious.



Whats the cause of borrowing, whether from your brother, from the Easy Loan Company, or through a store card? Research has clearly shown that the HIN virus is responsible. If you see something you like, and you want to Have It Now, then the HIN virus infects you. By the end of the month, youll have full-blown AIDS.



As a committed salary manager, you are, in some ways, married to your salary. Your budget is your marriage contract. If you go beyond the bounds of your budget by creating bad debt, you are being unfaithful to your salary.



Doing business with the Easy Loan Company is adultery. If adultery can save a marriage, then borrowing can save a debtor.



I am old-fashioned. We didnt have mathematics in the 1960s; we had arithmetic. We were taught that if you see 4 subtract 5, you had a hearty chuckle. You simply couldnt take 5 away from 4. Nowadays, arithmetic has given way to mathematics, and no one sees any humour in 4 subtract 5.



With grim seriousness, they say, "The answer is minus 1." "Ah-ah!" Our eyes light up, "So you can subtract 5 from 4!"



Now we have a new mindset. An old paradigm has been shifted - if I can take 5 from 4, then I can take 5 000 from 4 000. The answer will be minus 1 000. What couldnt be done in arithmetic is as easy as ABC in mathematics.



Its a short step to the dialogue: "So if I earn R4 000 I can spend R5 000?"



"Certainly. And youll be left with minus R1 000."



"What does the minus mean?"



"No idea, but just be glad that youre still left with something."



"Modern technology is stunning!"



I blame mathematics for the HIN/AIDS challenge we face. Im positive that negative numbers is the cause. Most financial gurus state other reasons for getting deep into debt:



1. Its too easy for you to obtain credit.

2. If you want something, you prefer to buy now and pay later, rather than save now and buy later.

3. The interest youre charged on loans (around 27%) creates a very profitable business for lenders of money. They advertise aggressively, convincing you that they are on your side.

4. When faced with borrowing at 27% interest charged to you, or saving at 7% interest paid to you, you opt for the higher interest rate. Just who is being clever here?

5. Say monthly budget, and you respond, "Thats my business - how dare you!"



What are the ABCs of managing your salary to avoid AIDS?

A. Abstain from borrowing money

B. Be faithful to a well-planned budget

C. Pay with cash. Not just any cash, but your cash.



When managing your salary, it helps to identify the whereabouts of any high accident zone; awareness reduces danger. Now you know two things; you know how the word hazard was developed, and you know that debt is a high accident zone. Steer well clear of debt.



The word credit, too, is an acronym. It means Carefully Research Every Debt-Initiating Transaction. Dont believe any advertiser who says that credit is simply an arrangement by which you can take possession of something now, and pay for it later.



So what is the vaccine for AIDS? The vaccine is knowledge – knowledge about what debt is, what causes it, and what its effects are. You have just been vaccinated. But dont be too confident; sadly, a high percentage of first vaccinations just dont take. At the earliest symptom of infection, get yourself vaccinated again.
